We Boomers Were Raised Right

Dear fellow boomers,

the group of us who remember mini-skirts, love beads and Nehru jackets (https://www.apetogentleman.com/nehru-jacket-guide/.)

I have a question for you all.

You know how everyone is always lamenting the fact that the current generation of young people, be they millennials or preschoolers, are lacking in basic manners? You hear that all the time, right? You hear and read that children today are so lacking in civility that one wonders what on earth is to become of us?

You hear your fellow gray haired old farts whispering about the fact that nobody even bothers to write a thank you note anymore. You talk amongst yourselves about when you ask your darling grandchildren if they’d like some juice, and they answer, “Nah” instead of “No thank you, dear Nonni.”

I know I hear it all the time. I even think it sometimes when spending the day with one of those very same darling grandchildren.

But it occurred to me today that perhaps the new generation has moved on to a kind of personal independence that we cotton heads haven’t found. It struck me, as I stood there in my kitchen waiting for the espresso to bubble, that maybe instead of the kids being rude, the reality was that I had…
