It fizzled out without a struggle

They say that American kids need to learn more about civics. I agree. I used to teach fifth grade, and we covered a lot of information about politics and political systems. We learned a lot about democracy, from the early Greeks to the formation of our Republic.

My students could tell you that the word “democracy” means “rule by the people.” It comes from the Greek words “demos” (the citizens) and “kratos” (rule). They could tell you that a democratic government is based upon certain key principles. Some of them include the opportunity for the citizens to choose their leaders, that free and open elections are necessary for democracy to exist, and that the powers of the government are derived from the consent of the governed.

I believe, and I desperately hope, that the vast majority of Americans understand that for a government to be considered a democracy, the citizens MUST be able to choose between a group of highly favored, highly competent leaders. The chosen leader in any democracy MUST be the person who is trusted/chosen by the majority of the electorate.

Am I right?

Then what the hell has happened to our country?

We are currently stuck in the deadly slog of an endless campaign between two deeply unpopular candidates…
