Time to take a closer look at school mandates through history.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 20 months, you’re aware that some people in these great United States are up in arms about the fact that they’re being asked to wear masks in public places. They are screaming about “freedom” and “individual rights” because they believe it’s tyranny for the government to make rules that protect public safety.

This argument is weak at best and self-serving at worst.

Being a member of society means following the rules that keep that society healthy and functional. We follow government rules all day, every day, in every space.

It’s not tyranny to mandate driver’s licenses. Nobody objects to showing an id before boarding a flight. We understand that we can’t smoke in an elevator.

Even if we wanna.

Because these are rules that protect society.

Yet the news is currently full of enraged parents protesting against proposed mask mandates in public schools.
