Oh, How I Wish Our Elections Were Popularity Contests

Maybe the leading contenders would have a clue

Sometimes people complain that our federal elections are actually “popularity contests.” You know, they claim that we only vote for people we like. We choose the best-looking, the most charismatic, the most engaging.

Hahahaha.

If only that were true.

At the moment, in the earliest stages of the 2024 presidential election, we find ourselves faced with a choice between “no” and “hell no”. It doesn’t matter which side you’re on, neither candidate is anyone’s idea of the most popular.

At the moment, the majority of registered voters in this country are unenrolled from either party. Most of us are thinking, “none of the above”. This graphic from Gallup shows the increase in unenrolled voters.

Polls clearly show that most Democrats are saying, “Welp, if it’s Joe against Donnie, we’ll vote for Joe.”

And most Republicans seem to be saying, “Welp, we don’t like Donnie, but we definitely could never vote for Joe.”
