So watch out

As the Trump 2.0 agenda has unfolded with the speed of light, I am increasingly desperate to find a good way to resist. Sure, I post here and on Bluesky and on Facebook, but what does that do?

Nothing.

Sure, I donate to causes that support the same beliefs I hold (ACLU, UNICEF, Southern Poverty Law Center), but none of that feels as if it is doing anything meaningful to help.

I feel so furious and so helpless.

My family has a dear friend, an immigrant from Uganda who is here on a work visa after escaping political violence in her home country. This woman, who we all call our “sister”, came into our lives when our Mother was facing increasing physical and mental fragility at the age of 90. Mom was determined to live out her last months in our family home, and our Ugandan friend Lynn was the reason she could do that.

Lynn moved in with Mom, helping her with bathing, dressing, laundry, cooking, and housecleaning. Most importantly, she was a companion to Mom, watching the British Baking Show, and NCIS each day. Playing the music of the 40s for Mom and looking at photo albums of our childhoods.

After Mom died, we all kept Lynn as much in our lives as possible. She was here with my family when I celebrated the…
