Israel to Pause Genocide in Order to Protect Children

The surreal situation facing Palestinian families

Some human actions are impossible to comprehend.

Taking a three-day break in the ongoing slaughter of an entire population might make sense if it was intended to bring an end to all the deaths. It might be reasonable to take a little time out from obliterating hospitals and schools if the intention was to reopen them safely. But that is not what Netanyahu and his government are doing.

Yielding to pressure from the UN and the WHO, Israel has agreed to a three-day cease-fire in the Gaza War. For roughly seventy-two hours the Israeli army will sit back and relax. The bombs will stop. The grenades won’t be lobbed. Maybe the overused weapons will be cleaned and polished.

It might feel like a short reprieve for the soldiers. I don’t know.

But how will it feel to the remaining families in the rubble-filled Gaza Strip?

I try to put myself in the position of a Palestinian mother. After spending nearly eleven months in constant terror, watching her friends, neighbors, and relatives die in front of her, how will she view three days of relative peace?

She will know that the only reason for the reprieve is another horror being…
