Glimmer #8: The Simple Things

I apologize in advance for this post. You’re no doubt expecting something touching and poignant from me on this day of gratitude. Perhaps something about the importance of gathering with loved ones about the family table. Something about traditions and memories and blah blah blah.

But no.

No, my friends. Alas, today I am turning to my inner hedonist.

My glimmer today is the smell of that turkey in the oven. Butter, herbs, salt, melting poultry fat. Ahhhhhh.

I love it.

I am suffused with joy just breathing in here today. There is still a lot to do; boil the potatoes, make the stuffing, stir up the gravy, put out the appetizers. I still have to set the table and whip the cream and find a few matching forks.

But the smell of roasting turkey. The anticipation of that first juicy bite, which I intend to savor slowly as my eyes close and the juice runs down my chin.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. May your rolls be flaky and your pies be sweet. And may every one of you have a moment or two of pure bliss, even if it’s as mundane as the smell of a good meal.
