Glimmer #20: Funny, Happy Faces
As a verified old lady, I have mostly run out of Christmas cheer. Sure, I still make cookies with the grandkids. We have a nice tree set up with all the family ornaments on it. I still sing carols and still do the whole wrapping thing (thank you, dear Lord, for gift bags….)
But I’m kinda done with the whole giant entertaining thing. No more yule log cakes or baked brie for me. I’m done with the shopping frenzy and the card writing and the outdoor lights. Too tired, too achy, too cynical.
Sorry, not sorry. I have put in my decades of Christmas cheer. Now I get to just rest and eat the chocolate.
But an hour ago I was putting away some dishes in my hutch. I looked up and my eyes landed on the small group of Santas I had set out when I couldn’t decide where to put my decorations. I had sort of just tossed them up there to finally be able to say I was done with decorating.
And there they were, in all their Santa glory. Tall, skinny Santas standing next to chubby little Santas. One made of cloth, one made of fragile glass, one made of wood and others simply ceramic. There was something so silly and special about them that I found myself laughing out loud.
I guess no matter how grumpy and cranky this old lady gets, she can still appreciate the absurdity of a bunch of toy Santas with one little old Mrs. Santa in there holding them all together.
Merry, happy and may all of your holiday hopes come true.
