We all gotta go some time

Dear Senator,

Let me begin by saying that you and I have nothing at all in common when it comes to policy, ideology, or political orientation.

In fact, I’m still pretty damn pissed off about the whole Merrick Garland thing. That was not an admirable moment for you.

But we do have one thing in common: we’re both getting old.

We both find ourselves a little more wobbly on our pins. We have a harder time finding the perfect words for what we hope to express. We are both increasingly confused by the latest technology.

So I understand.

I understand that you had a “senior moment today”. I am not sure if it was a seizure, a mini-stroke, or a sign of incipient dementia.

Don’t all of us older “cotton heads” ask ourselves what the heck just happened a few times a day?

Yup. We do.

But, see, here’s the thing that bothers me.

As a teacher, I recognized the moment when I had become “experienced yet obsolete”. I knew that it was time to hand my beloved students off to a younger, more optimistic, more excited set of young teachers. I retired.
